Soup Kitchen

Feeding the hungry

The corporal works of mercy consist especially in feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and imprisoned, and burying the dead. Among all these, giving alms to the poor is one of the chief witnesses to fraternal charity: it is also a work of justice pleasing to God:

He who has two coats, let him share with him who has none and he who has food must do likewise. But give for alms those things which are within; and behold, everything is clean for you. If a brother or sister is ill-clad and in lack of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what does it profit?

A three course meal, twice weekly

At 5pm Mondays and Wednesdays, regulars and one-time guests alike are welcomed to the Monaghan Centre at Sacred Heart Church for a home-cooked three-course meal.

Our parish soup kitchen ensures that all members of the Sunraysia community are well-fed with a variety of healthy meals. This free service seeks not only to provide nourishment but also to foster a sense of community. It is a social gathering where polite manners, engaging discussions, and meaningful interactions thrive.

All welcome. No bookings required.

Volunteering

New volunteers are always welcome to join the Soup Kitchen team, which includes almost 100 dedicated individuals. You may wish to donate food or your culinary talents, or you can offer your time for set up, serving, and clean up duties, which usually take around an hour.

Volunteer teams are organised by various community groups, such as the St Vincent de Paul Society, the Knights of the Southern Cross, St Joseph’s College, and our parish primary schools. Or you may choose to directly contact the parish office to join one of our parishioner teams. Your participation is greatly appreciated!
